If you’ve never had maternity photos taken before, you might have a million questions running through your head. What am I supposed to wear? Will I know how to pose? What if I feel awkward? How many outfits should I bring? What if I don’t know what to do with my hands? Trust me, you are not alone.
One of my favorite parts of maternity photography is taking away that pressure and making the experience feel easy. You don’t need to know how to pose, you don’t need to be a model, and you definitely don’t need to show up already knowing exactly what you want. That’s my job.
First, We’ll Talk About What You Want
Every maternity session is a little different. Some moms want something soft and simple, while others want dramatic gowns, beautiful backdrops, and a little more variety. Before your session, we’ll figure out what fits your style and what you’re most comfortable with. If you’re using my client closet, we can also go over gown options and decide what looks best with the type of session you’re planning. The goal is to create images that actually feel like you.
You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose
This is probably one of the biggest things I hear from clients: “I have no idea how to pose.” Good news, you don’t have to! I’ll guide you through everything from where to stand and how to position your hands to how to turn your body and where to look. I’ll make small adjustments as we go so the poses feel natural instead of forced. We’ll move through different poses and angles throughout the session so you end up with a gallery that has variety without feeling like you spent the entire time posing.
Your Belly Is the Star of the Show
Maternity photography is all about celebrating this stage of your life. That means a lot of the posing is intentionally designed to highlight your belly and the beautiful changes your body is going through. Sometimes that means a full-body image, sometimes it’s a close-up, and sometimes it’s simply the way you place your hands over your belly. Those little details can end up being some of my favorite images.
Outfit Changes Are Completely Up to You
Depending on the maternity package you choose, you can incorporate multiple looks into your session. You can keep things simple with one outfit or change things up with different gowns, fabrics, or backdrops. If you’re using the client closet, I’ll help you choose pieces that photograph beautifully and complement the overall look we’re creating. And if you have something of your own that you absolutely love, bring it! There’s no rule that says maternity photos have to look a certain way.
Most Importantly, I Want You to Feel Beautiful
I know pregnancy can be a complicated time when it comes to how you feel about your body. Some days you feel amazing. Other days you look in the mirror and wonder who that woman is. That’s completely normal. My job isn’t to make you look like someone else. It’s to photograph you in a way that makes you feel beautiful, confident, and proud of the woman you are right now. You deserve to exist in these photos, too. Years from now, your children aren’t going to care whether you thought you looked perfect that day. They’re going to see their mom carrying them, and that’s pretty special.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
The best time to schedule maternity photos is usually around 28–34 weeks, depending on how you’re feeling and how your pregnancy is progressing. Some moms prefer to book a little earlier, especially if they are expecting twins or have been told they may deliver early. The most important thing is choosing a time when you still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the session. Because at the end of the day, maternity photography isn’t just about getting pretty pictures. It’s about remembering this version of you: the belly, the excitement, the anticipation, the little kicks, the person you’re about to become, and the baby you’re already completely in love with.
Those are the moments that deserve to be remembered.
